QB3 affiliates honored
Five QB3 faculty affiliates were singled out for some of the nation's highest honors by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, which recently announced 2008 awardees.
The NAS elected 72 new members and 18 foreign associates from 9 countries. Inclusion in the NAS signifies recognition of distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Newly elected to the NAS are Michael Botchan, UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology; Kenneth Dill, UC San Francisco professor of biophysics; and Jasper Rine, UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology, director of UC Berkeley's Center for Computational Biology, and an HHMI professor. This brings the total number of QB3 faculty affiliates elected to NAS membership to 25.
The American Academy of Arts & Sciences elected 190 new fellows and 22 foreign honorary members. Newly elected are Fred Cohen, UC San Francisco professor of cellular and molecular pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, medicine, and biochemistry; John Kuriyan, Chancellor's Professor in the departments of molecular and cell biology and of chemistry and an investigator in HHMI at UC Berkeley; and Jasper Rine, UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology, director of UC Berkeley's Center for Computational Biology, and an HHMI professor. This brings the total number of QB3 faculty affiliates elected to the Academy to 23.
The Academy is an international learned society composed of the world's leading scientists, scholars, artists, business people, and public leaders.
