QB3@UCSF Wireless Network Guide
The wireless local area network (WLAN) environment in Byers Hall
(the UCSF QB3 building) has been designed to balance the security needs
of a health-sciences oriented campus with those of an academic,
research-oriented institution. In order to achieve this balance,
the UCSF QB3 WLAN environment provides two separate networks:
QB3-open and QB3-secure. These two networks, and
the procedures for accessing each, are described below.
QB3-open
The QB3-open network is an open network that is provided
primarily to meet the needs of guests and collaborators who need
access to the Internet while visiting Byers Hall. This network does
not use encryption or authentication, and hence should not be used
to transmit or receive sensitive or secure data. Once you are connected
to the QB3-open WLAN you will only be able to access Internet
sites outside of UCSF. Internal UCSF servers and web sites are not
accessible via this network. No special network configuration is
required to connect to the QB3-open WLAN with either a Macintosh
or PC computer, as long as that computer supports standard wireless
networking protocols.
UCSF faculty, staff, and students who wish to access internal
UCSF web sites and computers via the QB3-open network may do so if they
have the Nortel Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software installed
on their computer, and they have a UCSF VPN account. More information
about the UCSF VPN service is available at
http://its.ucsf.edu/services/network.
QB3-secure
The QB3-secure network is provided primarily to meet the
needs of QB3 faculty, staff, students and others who require secure
access to UCSF resources while in Byers Hall. QB3-secure is an
encrypted and authenticated network, and requires a Kerberos account ID
and password for access. You can obtain a Kerberos account from any
WLAN account facilitator located
in Byers Hall.
In addition, your computer system must be configured appropriately to
support the necessary wireless protocols. Detailed configuration
instructions are available for both Macs
and WindowsXP systems.
The QB3-secure network does not require installation of VPN
client software.
