Air sensitive samples for EI analysis need to be supplied in special sealed capillaries. Please see the Facility personnel to obtain these. Sample requirements for
air sensitive EI analysis are the same as for regular EI samples: between
50 micrograms (ug) and 1 mg. Air sensitive samples requiring FAB need to be coordinated in advance with one of the staff spectroscopists. In general, you will be given a small amount of a non-protic matrix, which you can bring into your glove box for degassing. Your sample and matrix are mixed in the box and the mixture is then brought down to the lab and given to the spectroscopist for analysis. IT IS IMPORTANT that you set up a time for analysis with a staff member in advance. Air sensitive samples can sometimes be analyzed by electrospray ionization ( ESI). Here, sample preparation and instrument setup are critical for the success of the analysis. Please contact Dr. Ulla Andersen (norklit@berkeley.edu) if you need to analyze an air sensitive sample by ESI.
