Mass spectrometer
Shown at top is a thermo linear ion trap mass spectrometer. At bottom is a nanoelectrospray source with nano-LC column in action.

The UCB Proteomics/Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (P/MSL) was founded in 2004 as part of UCB’s Cancer Research Laboratory. In 2007, we became the Vincent J. Coates Proteomics Laboratory, affiliated with QB3, in order to provide improved access to Proteomics services. We now occupy a spacious laboratory in Stanley Hall with a “wet” biochemistry area for protein sample preparation and room for expansion of our array of mass spectrometers.

The P/MSL provides proteomics services principally through mass spectrometry. Our tools are ion trap mass spectrometers equipped for LC-nanoelectrospray experiments. Currently we have two Thermo LTQ XL linear ion trap mass spectrometers, one of which is equipped for ETD fragmentation. A Thermo Orbitrap mass spectrometer is available on a limited basis through our neighbors, the QB3/College of Chemistry Mass Spectrometry Facility, for proteomics applications that demand high mass accuracy.

We specialize in the identification of proteins from complex samples using MudPIT chromatography as developed in the Yates lab (http://fields.scripps.edu/). We can locate post-translational modifications using either CID or ETD peptide fragmentation. Modification analysis is available even in complex samples. We can also perform relative quantitation in labeled samples employing SILAC or similar techniques. Many other types of analysis are possible. Please check our services offered to see details about analyses we perform routinely.
