Description
Highly trained postdoctoral scientists, if provided with the right business training, can help turn promising research into practical applications. BPEP aims to empower UC Berkeley postdocs to transform intellectual property into business plans or marketable products. Cooperating with sister entrepreneurship programs at universities such as UCSF, Stanford, MIT, Duke, Harvard, and several others, the BPEP will strive to encourage entrepreneurship among postdoctoral scientists.
Approach
BPEP consists of a postdoc committee operating under the auspices of Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Affairs Program and relying upon an Advisory Board for guidance and the ‘ideas to business’ workshop content (see below). BPEP will collaborate with existing entrepreneurial centers like QB3 and the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship, while reaching out to the postdoc community for participation. Beginning in Fall 2011, BPEP will provide a series of workshops preparing postdocs to compete in the UC Berkeley Business Plan Competition.
